We all know sleep is crucial to living a healthy life. It impacts our eating habits, mental state and our ability to cope. Sleep deprivation can cause you to lose up to 11 days of productivity per year, and people who only get five to six hours (as opposed to seven-plus) are over four times more likely to get sick. When you combine those two aspects, you start to understand just how profound of an impact sleep deprivation has on the country as a whole—currently about $411 billion in lost output annually.

Before we go any further, here are four general steps for helping to support one’s sleep:

1. Work with your physician to resolve any issues with sleep apnea

2. Limit your caffeine consumption and try to avoid alcohol

3. Maintain a regular sleep schedule to keep your body on-track

4. Reduce stress with meditation and exercise a few hours before bed

5. Eat a healthy plant based diet
